How Does a VPN Change Your IP?
When you connect to a VPN, your device creates an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server. All your internet traffic is routed through this server, and websites see the VPN server's IP address instead of your real IP. This is why using a VPN makes it appear as if you are in a different city or country.
For example, if you are in Nepal but connect to a VPN server in the United States, websites will see a US-based IP address and show you US-localized content.

What Does the VPN Check Detect?
Our VPN detection tool analyzes your IP address against known VPN providers and datacenter ranges:
- Organization name matching — We check if your ISP/organization name contains keywords from known VPN providers (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN, Mullvad, etc.) and datacenter providers (AWS, DigitalOcean, Google Cloud, etc.).
- ASN range analysis — We check if your Autonomous System Number falls within known datacenter ASN ranges.
Why Would You Want to Hide Your IP?
- Privacy — Prevent websites and advertisers from tracking your real location
- Security — Protect your connection on public Wi-Fi networks
- Bypass geo-restrictions — Access content that's limited to specific regions
- Avoid ISP throttling — Prevent your ISP from slowing down certain types of traffic
Limitations of VPN IP Detection
This detection is heuristic-based and may not be 100% accurate. It can't:
- Detect all VPN providers — new VPN services appear regularly
- Distinguish between a VPN and a legitimate datacenter connection
- Detect VPNs that use residential IP addresses (some premium VPNs offer this)
The tool is designed for informational purposes only. For accurate VPN detection, you may need specialized network analysis tools.
Why Use a VPN?
Ever connected to public Wi-Fi and wondered who else might be watching? That's where a VPN comes in. When you connect to one, your traffic gets encrypted and routed through a remote server, making it way harder for anyone to snoop on what you're doing. I remember sitting in a Starbucks in Kathmandu, realizing the airport Wi-Fi didn't even require a password — that's exactly the kind of network where you don't want to check your bank account without a VPN.
Beyond security, people use VPNs to access geo-blocked content — streaming libraries from different countries, news sites restricted in certain regions, or services available only in specific markets. Plenty of folks also rely on them to stop ISPs from throttling things like video streaming or torrenting.
How to Run a Quick VPN Test
Open the tool above and note your IP and connection type before connecting to your VPN. Then turn on your VPN, wait a few seconds, and refresh the page. If the IP changed and the tool now shows "VPN Detected" or "Hosting," your VPN is working as expected. If your real IP still shows up, you might have a DNS leak or your VPN might not be routing all traffic through the tunnel.
I usually run this test two or three times with different VPN servers. Some servers get flagged as datacenter IPs while others show as residential — worth knowing which is which before you rely on one for privacy-sensitive work.
Free VPN vs Paid VPN
I'll be honest — free VPNs are tempting, but they come with real tradeoffs. Most free providers make money by logging your activity and selling it to advertisers. Others inject ads into your traffic or cap your bandwidth. Some have even been caught bundling malware or leaking user data. You get what you pay for.
Paid services are a different story. The good ones have strict no-logs policies, get audited by third parties, and offer way faster speeds with more server options. At $3-12 a month, it's probably the cheapest privacy investment you'll make. I'd rather pay a few bucks than find out my "free" VPN was selling my browsing history.
Can a VPN Be Detected?
Yes. Websites and services can detect VPN usage through several methods. The most common is cross-referencing your IP address against known VPN server IP ranges. Many streaming platforms (Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu) maintain extensive databases of VPN IPs and block them. Some advanced detection methods analyze traffic patterns, TLS handshake characteristics, and latency anomalies to identify VPN connections even when the IP itself isn't in a known VPN range.
If you need to ensure your VPN is working correctly, run our tool both before and after connecting. Before connecting, note your real IP and location. After connecting, verify that the IP and location have changed and that the tool correctly identifies your connection as a VPN or datacenter IP.
